Dimensions: 27ʺW × 33ʺD × 35ʺH
A wonderfully spirited pair of French Art Deco His-and-Hers armchairs dating to the 1930s, retaining their original geometric velvet upholstery and multicolored bullion fringe.
The complementary chairs feature subtly different proportions, with tall, gently flared backs, generously upholstered seats, and gracefully sweeping arms terminating in rounded scrolls. Their sculptural silhouettes are characteristic of the French Art Deco period, balancing elegant curves with substantial, comfortable proportions.
The velvet upholstery features a bold geometric pattern of interlocking diamonds and squares in rich shades of golden ochre, caramel, chocolate brown, and black. The striking fabric is complemented by substantial twisted bullion fringe in alternating shades of rust, amber, and gold, creating a particularly playful decorative effect.
Decorative nailhead trim follows the contours of the upholstered frames, while turned wooden feet are concealed beneath the fringe.
A charming and unusually expressive pair, these chairs embody the more exuberant side of French Art Deco design. Their upholstery, rich palette, and contrasting proportions give them a distinctive personality that would be equally at home in a traditional interior or an eclectic contemporary setting. Enjoy them as they are, with all the charm and timeworn elegance of their vintage upholstery, or reupholster them to suit a new vision, offering endless decorative possibilities.
France, circa 1930.
Good antique condition, retaining vintage velvet upholstery and decorative bullion fringe with wear consistent with age and use.
The velvet exhibits areas of fading, pile wear, and discoloration, particularly across the seats and arms. One chair has a noticeable area of fabric loss to the seat, as photographed. Additional minor wear and abrasions are present along the upholstered edges.
The original multicolored bullion fringe remains largely intact, with some unevenness, minor fraying, and wear. The turned wooden feet have been replaced on one chair and the feet of the other exhibit wear and losses to their black painted finish. Solid and sturdy in form.
The 'His' chair measures overall 35" tall x 33" deep x 27" wide with an arm height of 20" and a seat interior of 21.75" deep x 19.5" wide . The 'Her' chair measures overall 33" tall x 32.5" deep x 27" wide with an arm height of 21" and a seat interior of 20.5" deep x 19" wide.
