Italian Carved Giltwood Mirror with Shell Pediment and Acanthus Surround

A large, carved Italian Florentine giltwood mirror featuring a bold shell and acanthus pediment and a pierced foliate surround. The cresting is centered on a large scallop shell in full relief, flanked by vigorous acanthus scrolls that sweep outward and downward to merge with the pierced surround. The side borders are carved with deeply undercut acanthus leaves and C-scroll volutes that fill the border with movement and depth. The lower rail carries a corresponding arrangement of scrolling acanthus and shell ornament, completing the decorative scheme with symmetry. An inner beaded moulding frames the mirror plate between the carved surround and the glass. The gilding throughout is rich and warm and has developed the slightly burnished, slightly darkened quality associated with genuinely aged gold finish. A mirror of this scale and decorative weight makes an immediate statement in an entrance hall, drawing room, or over a substantial fireplace.
